Biennial Competitions a Few Months Away

The call for submissions and guidelines for the art, music, and letters Biennial competitions will appear in the fall issue of The Pen Woman, and here is some information to get you thinking about these exciting contests.

Art

By Joan Applebaum, National Art Chair

Pen Women artists, our next Biennial seems like it’s still a long way off, but time moves quickly and before you know it, it will be time to submit your entries. And I do hope that many of you will be entering the competition. Our 2024 Biennial, which will take place in Columbus, Ohio, promises to be a very special event. Biennial CoChairs Bev Goldie and Darlene Yeager-Torre have secured a fabulous venue for our art show, the Cultural Arts Center located in downtown Columbus. The gallery space is amazing. Visit the Cultural Arts Center online to see for yourself at culturalartscenteronline.org.

This is a great time to start working on some new pieces or going through your files to see what you might want to submit. I’m looking forward to seeing all of your entries. Feel free to contact me with any questions at artchair@ nlapw.org.

Letters

Karen McAferty Morris, National Letters Chair

The Biennial letters competition always includes a variety of contests, and our next contests will be much the same as in the past. Take a look at the Fall 2021 issue of The Pen Woman to see the last call for entries.

New this year: The Pensacola Branch is sponsoring the Ann T. Davis Memorial Ekphrastic Award for a nonfiction or fiction ekphrastic of 300-500 words. A photo of the art or an online link to it must be provided. If any other branch wishes to sponsor a new contest, please contact me at lettchair@nlapw.org.

The submission period for the letters competition will be Nov. 1 – Dec. 15. Please remember: Previous Vinnie Ream or Biennial contest winning entries are not accepted. So, besides reviewing your recent work, let this summer be a perfect time to write something new!

Music

By Sunny Zank, National Music Chair
The Biennial music and choreography competition will be similar to the one in 2022. Thus, now is a good time to look at the Fall 2021 issue of The Pen Woman to review the call for entries and to begin thinking about entering.

It’s my hope that many of you will enter — perhaps this summer will spark some musical ideas. The music program and recital will take place at the Columbus Cultural Art Center (think Baby Grand).

We are few in number but mighty all the same. I hope each of you is part of the monthly Zoom meetings that Grace Joy Reid, NLAPW fifth vice president, has organized. Please feel free to contact me at musichair@nlapw.org.
