In the Studio With… Sandra Eliot
Carved-Up Inspiration
By Sandra Eliot, Member-at-Large, Pennsylvania

My sculptures are assemblages of objects I create with wood. I am fascinated by wood weathered by natural forces (water, storms, insects) that leave inspiring forms, which I alter by carving, cutting, enhancing textures, and sometimes adding color. To give counterpoint to these forms, I combine geometric pieces I’ve fabricated from new lumber and off-cuts from a furniture maker.
I may use stone or other materials to enhance the meaning and structure. Sometimes I envision a sculpture right from the start. At other times, the pieces inspire my intuitive vision as I work.
The subject or imagery is metaphorical and open to interpretation. The initial inspiration is always the textures and exposed interior structure (skeleton), which are the life story of the wood: knots, gnarled and damaged parts, its environment. I always want to honor the beauty and spirit of wood and trees.
