Featured Poem: Complications

By Judy Crystal
Greenwich Branch, Connecticut

Just a simple cataract surgery

Well

Maybe not so simple

But successful

Straightforward

As expected

Until

Two weeks later

On a sunny afternoon

The air conditioning

Performing enthusiastically

In answer to a heat wave

I was chilled

Really freezing

Grabbed my old black cardigan

From its familiar shelf

And

Looking down as I fastened the buttons

The sweater was brown

A rich crayon-colored brown

For ten years no one had ever said a word

As I wore it confidently

With black skirts

To meetings or parties

Or even my garden club

A simple cataract surgery

Humility is complicated

  1. Andrea Jones Walker says:

I agree humility is quite complicated and appreciate the example you used to illustrate that observation. Very nice.

  2. Karen Morris says:

Oh, I like this a lot- despite the “freezing,” so much warmth here from our friends. And you’re right about humility. πŸ™‚ We can all identify with this enjoyable poem.
