Featured Poem: Balance

By Sally Wahl Constain
Jacksonville Branch, Florida

How do we do it? How

do we keep our balance

in these trying times?

Nowadays, it seems everyone

is out of sorts, outside the norm.

We walk on eggshells trying

not to offend or offer advice,

not to burst out

with withering,

final farewells,

just because

we are so far apart.

On everything.

Politics intervenes

in every venue

every decision

of our shaky existences.

How do we walk the balance

beam without prior practice

or professional guidance?

How?

The metaphor of the balance beam works well here, as many can no longer count on walking on familiar solid paths. Your poem speaks well to how bewildering this “shaky existence” seems.

Dearest Sally, Your poem is a testament, a prayer, a plea for balance. I find it interesting that so many of us are aware of your thoughts, your words, yet feel so unheard. How is that possible? How?
These challenging times certainly make our inner circle of friends invaluable. I suspect the women of yesteryear faced a lot of discrepancies and somehow mustered the grace to see them through.
Sending appreciation and a big old fashion hug to you for your poem.

An almost universal sentiment today, so it’s very real. Expressed in every-day language, it could easily be heard in every town, in every tongue.
