My kids say
My dog loves me
Because I feed him,
Makes him feel good.
I feed my husband all his favorites
So he can feel good.
He says he loves me.
Have I discovered how to be loved
So I too can feel good?
But wait!
Is feeling good the answer to life?
Always about food, fame, fortune,
Being loved?
But these things are fleeting, impermanent, always changing.
Still, we want to feel good.
What’s wrong with that?
Isn’t it the answer to happiness?
But the enlightened would say:
A truly feel-good life
Is about unmasking our selfish wants
(The root of all our suffering),
Transcending the human condition
And discovering health and happiness
In the joy of being
A beneficial presence
In this beautiful world.
It seems feeling good is quite simple!
I enjoyed reading your poem. Such topics make me wonder about degrees or levels of enlightenment. I wonder if the taste of food changes accordingly?
Thanks for sharing!
What a lovely and meaningful poem and written in a wonderful style, simple and poignant.
NICE JOB.
MY MUTTS LOVE ME BECAUSE I’M THEIR CHEF. WHEN I’M NOT PREPPING THEIR FOOD THEY SIT ON MY HUSBAND’S LAP. “LITTLE TRAITORS”
Love this phrase, Little Traitors, might be the title to a short story. 🙂 Sally
