Do you remember the hands of another
An aunt or a sister
A father or mother
Soft warm feel of flannel that washed you
A meal on the table
The someone who knew you
Who tied your shoelaces?
Who buttoned your jacket?
Who took you to places you wanted to go?
Do you remember the hairbrush’s strokes
The warmth and the caring
The laughter and jokes?
By whose hands the broom swept?
Who stayed near a phone
And always a watch kept
Until you were home?
Who illumines the memories filtered through time
Who taught you to love and to care and to know?
