Featured Poem: The Poet

By Janet Clare Fagal
Central New York Branch

She’s always gathering words:

playful, mournful,

inventive, gossamer.

Words to caress, entice.

Ponder.

She weaves her words with care,

stitches lines and stanzas

with a delicate touch,

urges metaphor to wear a silken gown,

coaxes shy rhyme to appear.

Like bursts of comet dust

ideas scatter and swirl.

They begin to dance onto the page.

Bits of light spill here and there,

leaving a hazy trail.

She grabs her pen,

nudges the next poem to life.

Thank you, Dorothy. I had fun working on this poem and seeing how I could weave the poet’s process into a poem that would resonate with others.

Janet, a perfectly descriptive poem! I selfishly love it because it sounds like I and my/our fellow poets would similarly think and write your beautifully chosen words. Thank you, thank you! You are a poet indeed! More, more… Lois

Such a lovely comment, Lois. Thank you so much, it means a lot coming from a poet like you. Poetry is often a pleasure and sometimes I adore it, sometimes it mystifies me and I struggle, but I love grasping the pure pleasure of a poem’s breath. Even when it deals with hard topics, it can bring light.
